During the summer of 2020, the Big Sky Aphasia Program at the University of Montana is offering an Intensive Comprehensive Aphasia Program (ICAP) for individuals with aphasia and/or apraxia of speech (and their caregivers) resulting from stroke or traumatic brain injury. Please refer to our webpage for a detailed description of our ICAP.
The summer 2020 ICAP will run from Friday, May 29th through Thursday, July 2nd. This time frame includes all pre-treatment testing, treatment, and post-treatment testing, and debriefing/home programming. Treatment includes daily individual treatment, small conversation group treatment, and large group sessions with a focus on improving language impairments, addressing psychosocial well-being, and implementing strategies for living with aphasia. Technology-based treatment (e.g., tablets, computers, phones, AAC devices) are incorporated into all types of therapy sessions. Treatment also includes weekly caregiver education and caregiver group counseling sessions. Participants with aphasia receive speech and language treatment for up to five hours per day, four days per week, for four weeks. To ensure a cohesive group and obtain optimal outcomes, participants enrolled in the ICAP are asked to commit to attending the program in its entirety, including pre- and post-treatment assessment and post-treatment debriefing.
Before treatment begins, participants receive a comprehensive speech and language evaluation to determine their individual strengths and needs. This assessment will be held on Friday, May 29th OR Monday, June 1st and typically lasts 3-4 hours. The ICAP culminates with post-treatment testing (Monday, June 29th or Tuesday, June 30th) and a final conference (July 2nd) to discuss progress and to make recommendations for home programming and further services.
The cost of our 2020 ICAP includes pre- and post-treatment assessment, all aphasia treatment and caregiver educational and counseling sessions, weekly recreational outings, and weekly hosted lunches. The tuition for the 2020 ICAP will be $2900. Scholarships may be available.
Completing the Application
Please complete this online application to the best of your ability by March 2, 2020. We will follow up with you if we have additional questions about the person with aphasia's eligibility for this intensive program.
This application does not ensure your enrollment into the ICAP. We typically receive more applications than we have available spaces. We accept a total of eight families for each summer ICAP. We will review all applications and notify you of your acceptance status by Monday, March 20, 2020. If you are accepted into the program we will ask you to complete one additional online form.
